On Tuesday at lunchtime, 28 Vinnies students peeled 15kg of potatoes kindly donated by the Vinciguerra family.

At 2.40pm parents Nina Cremin, Jodi Lyra, Carmel Homer, Monica Jardim and Liza Baskovich chopped and cooked the potatoes, rice and pasta ready for the 12 students and eight staff who cooked the remainder of the meals.

Thanks are due to the McLoughlin family (McLoughlin Meats) and the Jardim family who donated the meat and the rice. This Vinnies event would not be possible without the help and generosity of our Home Economics Department staff, Leida Eyken and Pam Van Eyck.

The meals were loaded by students into a Shopfront vehicle on Wednesday morning and we were told that their freezer was empty so they were delighted to receive our meals.

Today was amazing. The food smelled so good and it smelled even better because we knew that it was going to an amazing cause (Shopfront). We laughed the whole time. Our work paid off with 210 steaming hot meals going to people in need. It is definitely worth the time and I know that I will come to every session I can.

My friends and I took part in helping those who need it the most. We made 210 meals for those who visit Shopfront. When we heard that 70 people a day go for a meal it made the experience all the more worthwhile. It was so much fun to cook, serve and chat with everyone. During the experience, we made new friends in all years. It was so much fun to hang out with my friends but know it was all going to a good cause. Awesome!

On Tuesday, we willingly gave up two hours of our afternoon to participate and help in the process of making and distributing food for Shopfront. Shopfront is a not-for-profit organisation that works to feed the homeless and provides any other needs, such as toothpaste and blankets. I confidently speak on behalf of the students and staff involved when I say that this gave us a strong sense of social justice and companionship. I strongly encourage any students to participate in the cooking for shopfront in the future.
